    ANTI-BULLFIGHTING MANIFESTO – BARCELONA 2004

The City Council did declare Barcelona officially anti-bullfighting in a decision unprecedented among the capital cities of Spain. Moreover, before and after this event, other Catalan municipalities have also been taking a stance against bullfights.

Therefore, in the name of democracy and the free expression of the will of the great majority of Catalans, we petition Mr. Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona, that the spirit of this manifesto continues to be defended by the City Council; and to Mr. Pasqual Maragall, President of the Generalitat, that the law be modified so that bullfighting is forever banned in Catalonia.

Undoubtedly, history will be the judge of bullfighting. But there is still time for this judgement not to include the authorities that belittle the will of the majority of the people whom they represent. Please, save the city of Barcelona, and all the cities and towns of Catalonia from this shame and this contempt for democracy.

No more bullfights in Barcelona. No more bullfights in Catalonia. NOW.

    ANTI-BULLFIGHTING MANIFESTO – BARCELONA 2004

We are in the XXI century, and in this modern and civilized Europe that we are all trying to build, such cruel traditions as bullfights are still taking place. Nothing justifies cruelty to animals, much less making a bloody show of it in the name of tradition and its questionable artistic values.

In the Barcelona of the XXI century, so European and cosmopolitan, organizer of the Universal Forum of Cultures, this demeaning spectacle has no place. We can no longer tolerate something that fills the majority of Barcelonians with indignation in the eyes of thousands of people from around the world who visit our city every year.

In serious surveys, Barcelona has repeatedly come out against bullfights. Over 250,000 people gave their support to the joint campaign started by the animal rights organizations ADDA and WSPA to declare Barcelona officially anti-bullfighting. Aware of this, the City Council did declare Barcelona officially anti-bullfighting in a decision unprecedented among the capital cities of Spain.

No more bullfights in Barcelona. No more bullfights in Catalonia. NOW.
