Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The Scottish SPCA has been caring for and striving to prevent cruelty to Scotland's animals for 166 years.

Having started out in 1839, principally to ensure the welfare of carthorses, the Society is now established as the country's largest animal welfare charity.

The Scottish SPCA's education department delivers an essential programme in schools and communities, engendering an informed and positive attitude towards animals among young and old.

Education officers visit schools around the country and run classes from the education units at ourMiddlebank, Bothwell and Milton centres.

We play a major role in shaping government policy and actions by providing guidance to parliamentarians and officials and campaigning for improved animal welfare legislation across Scotland, Europe and the world.

Our work alleviates suffering for many thousands of animals and often results in once mistreated pets being re-homes with loving owners, the improvemetn of farm conditions for animals and wildlife being returned fit and healthy to their natural habitats. (Photo credit right: Ian Jacobs)
