Stop the Shearwater Slaughter
Every year in Tasmania, Australia, there is a 2 week recreational hunting season of the chicks of the Short-tailed Shearwater (commonly known here as a muttonbird), a migratory species. Help us stop this slaughter of hundreds of thousands of chicks by writing to the Tasmanian and Australian governments in protest.
The Short-tailed Shearwater only breeds in Australia, with the majority of its nests being in Tasmania. The chicks grow fast and reach almost twice the weight of an adult, storing fat in order to survive up to 3 weeks after their parents leave, before they themselves depart for the Northern Hemisphere. The hunting season starts in late March each year. Write now and help us stop the 2006 season!
