This site suggests that Europe stops importing turtles from the U.S.A. because the importation causes terrible pains to these animals and is a risk for local species. In order to accomplish the ban on the importation, the site proposes a petition to the European Parliament that every European citizen can sign.

    Detailed Information:
No more than 20% of the turtles that are bred for exportation from the USA to Europe survive their first year of life, whereas, in the wild, a terrapin's life reaches 30 years.

The turtles who survive pose a threat to the European species, such as the Emys Orbicularis or the Mauremys Leprosa, because when they get too big they are often thrown in the wild where they usually win the competition with other species.
