    IAHAIO's mission is to promote on an international basis research, education and sharing of information about human-animal interaction and the unique role that animals play in human well-being and quality of life.

    IAHIO's Secretariat is based at Delta Society in Renton, Washington, USA. Since its founding in 1990, IAHAIO's main role has been to provide a coordinating structure between all member countries and to be a communication link to convey the latest research findings and encourage further program development. It also gives out awards to acknowledge contributions made by individuals or institutions in the study of the human-companion animal relationship. These include the IAHAIO "Pets in Cities" and "Distinguished Scholar" Awards.
