Student Rewarded for Her Efforts in Making NJ the 9th State to Pass a Law Giving Students the Legal Right to Say No to Dissection
Celebrating 10 years of providing dissection alternatives through its free loan program, The Science Bank, Animalearn is rewarding a student, teachers, and a parent for making a difference for animals used in education. Animalearn’s student recipient is Washington Township Senior Laura Dixon, who provided testimony supporting New Jersey student choice legislation.

Jenkintown, PA – Celebrating 10 years of providing dissection alternatives through its free loan program, The Science Bank, Animalearn is rewarding a student, teachers, and a parent for making a difference for animals used in education. Animalearn’s student recipient is Washington Township Senior Laura Dixon, who provided testimony supporting New Jersey student choice legislation. In January 2006, due to the efforts of many, including Dixon, New Jersey became the 9th state to pass a law requiring student dissection choice.
On September 26 at the Animal Welfare Association in Voorhees, NJ, Animalearn awarded Dixon with several cat dissection alternatives for her to donate to her school for those students who are ethically opposed to traditional dissection and want to exercise their right to choose an alternative under the new student choice law. According to Dixon, who shares her home with many companion animals, Washington Township High School uses cats in its anatomy classes.
Compassion towards animals runs in Dixon’s family. Dixon’s mother, Karen Dixon-Aquino, is the Executive Director of the Animal Welfare Association and strongly supports her daughter’s efforts in making dissection choice a reality for New Jersey students.
“Laura Dixon is the perfect candidate to receive these alternatives because she went above and beyond the realm of what most students would do to speak out for animals used in education,” said Nicole Green, Animalearn’s Assistant Director of Education.
The donation to Dixon is part of an effort to recognize teachers, parents, and students nationwide who are shaping the future of humane education in lasting and important ways. Animalearn’s celebration of The Science Bank’s comprehensive 10th anniversary celebration also includes the launch of a new website, and the promotion of a new flash animation. Animalearn’s new website, www.animalearn.org, will feature a newly expanded library of over of 300 CD-ROMS, models, and videos, available completely free to science classrooms nationwide.
Animalearn, the education division of the American Anti-Vivisection Society, is dedicated to assisting educators and students in finding non-animal methods to teach and study science. Towards that objective, Animalearn created The Science Bank, a comprehensive lending program of over 300 CD-ROMS, realistic models, and many more humane products that enable educators to teach and students to learn anatomy, physiology, and psychology lessons without harming animals.
