Proposition 2 on California's ballot in last November's election requires that "... a person shall not tether or confine any covered animal, on a farm, for all or the majority of any day, in a manner that prevents such animal from: (a) Lying down, standing up, and fully extending his or her limbs; and (b) Turning around freely." The Proposition was enacted by an overwhelming 63 percent of the vote and will be going into effect in 2015.
Proposition 2 was placed on the November ballot by a petition signed by 800,000 voters. It was promoted by Californians for Humane Farms, involving hundreds of animal activists.
Although some animal rights advocates felt that the Proposition gave implicit license to raise and slaughter animals for food “humanely,” proponents argued that the campaign would also enhance public awareness of the atrocities of factory farming and recruit hundreds of activists who could be then be activated to promote a vegan diet in keeping with animal rights ideology.
